Some truth About Marijuana- Killing the Myths

Hello Everyone,

Evelyn Here,

Now the comclusion of  "Marijuana: The Myths Are Killing Us” issued by the DEA on April 26, 2006., and written by Karen P. Tandy, the Administrator, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Washington, D.C., and Chair, IACP Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Committee. The link  to the references is below.

 Part Two

Myth: Marijuana is harmless.

Reality: Marijuana is dangerous to the user.
Use of marijuana has adverse health, safety, social, academic, economic, and behavioral consequences; and children are the most vulnerable to its damaging effects. Marijuana is the most widely used illicitdrug in America24 and is readily available to kids.25 Compounding the problem is that the marijuana of today is not the marijuana of the baby boomers 30 years ago. Average THC levels rose from less than 1 percent in the mid-1970s to more than 8 percent in 2004.26 And the potency of B.C. Bud,a popular type of marijuana cultivated in British Columbia, Canada, is roughly twice the national average-ranging from 15 percent THC content to 20 percent or even higher.27

Marijuana use can lead to dependence and abuse. Marijuana was the second most common illicit drug responsible for drug treatment admissions in 2002-outdistancing crack cocaine, the next most prevalent cause.28 Shocking to many is that more teens are in treatment each year for marijuana dependence than for alcohol and all other illegal drugs combined.29 This is a trend that has been increasing for more than a decade: in 2002, 64 percent of adolescent treatment admissions reported marijuana as their primary substance of abuse, compared to 23 percent in 1992.30

Marijuana is a gateway drug. In drug law enforcement, rarely do we meet heroin or cocaine addicts who did not start their drug use with marijuana. Scientific studies bear out our anecdotal findings. For example, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported, based on a study of300 sets of twins, that marijuana-using twins were four times more likely than their siblings to use cocaine and crack cocaine, and five times more likely to use hallucinogens such as LSD.31 Furthermore, the younger a person is when he or she first uses marijuana, the more likely that person is to use cocaine and heroin and become drug-dependent as an adult. One study found that 62 percent of the adults who first tried marijuana before they were 15 were likely to go on to use cocaine. In contrast, only 1 percent or less of adults who never tried marijuana used heroin or cocaine.32

Smoking marijuana can cause significant health problems. Marijuana contains more than 400 chemicals, of which 60 are cannabinoids.33 Smoking a marijuana cigarette deposits about three to five times more tar into the lungs than one filtered tobacco cigarette.34 Consequently, regular marijuana smokers suffer from many of the same health problems as tobacco smokers, such as chronic coughing and wheezing, chest colds, and chronic bronchitis.35 In fact, studies show that smoking three to four joints per day causes at least as much harm to the respiratory system as smoking a full pack of cigarettes every day.36 Marijuana smoke also contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke and produces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into malignant cells.37

In addition, smoking marijuana can lead to increased anxiety, panic attacks, depression, social withdrawal, and other mental health problems, particularly for teens.38 Research shows that kids aged 12 to 17 who smoke marijuana weekly are three times more likely than nonusers to have suicidal thoughts.39 Marijuana use also can cause cognitive impairment, to include such short-term effects as distorted perception, memory loss, and trouble with thinking and problem solving. Students with an average grade of D or below were found to be more than four times as likely to have used marijuana in the past year as youths who reported an average grade of A.40 For young people, whose brains are still developing, these effects are particularly problematic and jeopardize their ability to achieve their full potential.41

Myth: Smoking marijuana harms only the smokers.

Reality: Marijuana use harms nonusers.
We need to put to rest the thought that there is such a thing as a lone drug user, a person whose habits affect only himself or herself. Drug use, including marijuana use, is not a victimless crime. Some in your communities may resist involvement because they think someone else's drug use is not hurting them. But this kind of not-my-problem thinking is tragically misguided. Ask those same people about secondhand smoke from cigarettes, and they'll quickly acknowledge the harm that befalls nonsmokers. Secondhand smoke is a well-known problem, one that Americans are becoming more unwilling to bear. We need to apply the same common-sense thinking to the even more pernicious secondhand effects of drug use.

Take for instance the disastrous effects of marijuana smoking on driving. As the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted, "Epidemiology data from . . . traffic arrests and fatalities indicate that after alcohol, marijuana is the most frequently detected psychoactive substance among driving populations."42 Marijuana causes drivers to experience decreased car handling performance, increased reaction times, distorted time and distance estimation, sleepiness, impaired motor skills, and lack of concentration.43

The extent of the problem of marijuana-impaired driving is startling. One in six (or 600,000) high school students drive under the influence of marijuana, almost as many as drive under the influence of alcohol, according to estimates released in September 2003 by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).44 A study of motorists pulled over for reckless driving showed that, among those who were not impaired by alcohol, 45 percent tested positive for marijuana.45

For those of you who patrol streets and highways, you know that the consequences of marijuana-impaired driving can be tragic. For example, four children and their van driver-nicknamed Smokey by the children for his regular marijuana smoking-died in April 2002 when a Tippy Toes Learning Academy van veered off a freeway and hit a concrete bridge abutment. He was found atthe crash scene with marijuana in his pocket.46

Some such drug-impaired drivers will be detected through the Drug Recognition Expert program, which operates under the direction of the IACP and is supported by NHTSA.47 However, if we are to bolster cases against drugged drivers, greater protection for innocents on the road requires the development of affordable roadside drug detection tests, and some are in the testing phase now.

Secondhand smoke from marijuana kills other innocents as well. Last year, two Philadelphia firefighters were killed when they responded to a residential fire stemming from an indoor marijuana grow.48 In New York City, an eight-year-old boy, Deasean Hill, was killed by a stray bullet just steps from his Brooklyn home after a drug dealer sold a dime bag of marijuana on another dealer's turf.49

Chief: Help Spread the Truth about Marijuana
Debunking these myths and arming our young people and their parents with the facts do work. We have proof. It came in the form of good news from the Monitoring the Future survey that reveals that marijuana use has dropped 36 percent among eighth graders since 1996, and modestly declined among 10th and 12th graders.50 It is no coincidence that while marijuana use declined, the proportion of students perceiving marijuana use as dangerous increased.51 "Quite possibly, the media campaign aimed at marijuana use that has been undertaken by ONDCP, in collaboration with the Partnership for a Drug Free America, has been having its intended effect," University of Michigan researcher Lloyd Johnston, the study's principal investigator, said.52 Research also shows that parental disapproval can prevent teen drug use. Most young people (89 percent) reported that their parents strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana. Among these youths, only 5 percent had used marijuana in the past month.53

Spread the truth. Join with your community leaders. Clear the smokescreen by educating the children, parents, teachers, physicians, and legislators in your community before the myths kill any more Irma Perezes or Deasean Hills.

No Drug Zone!

Hello Everyone,

Evelyn here,

Tonight, I witnessed the people on the corner out there with passing cars.  I have seen them do this twice more in the last two weeks. I believe they are selling illegal drugs and that some equally bad residents are trying to protect them.  I am not sure if these other residents get a share in the illicit product made form the sell of those drugs or if they think they can intimidate all residents who do not want the illegal drugs sold on that corner.

I have also reported the pushers tonight, and have been told by a member of the police department that when I see their activity again to call and that  a police officer would be sent.  I am not satisfied with this solution.

These are drug pushers and have had their way for at least the last three years unmolested by anyone because the other people here were either afraid to report the pushers or they just did not care. The pushers know that they are being watched and i have seen then hide in the shadows in from their house and behind the cars on the lot, and only show themselves when a car approached and stops on that corner.

These pushers are bad and they have not been dominate in my live.  They have tried many dirty to stop me from reporting them, but what they are doing is illegal and their are noting the evil drug pushers who have torn ed this neighborhood and much of city a part seeking protect their illicit trade and hush anyone who dislikes and attempts the stop them from selling the drugs. their efforts has done noting, but more and more people are aware of the fact that the pushers are out out at night.

It is always the same households on this avenue and they do use third parties (people unknown to me who try to make trouble for me and my family).  Just recently I learned first hand and from a couple of their third members that they are still seeking revenge for my getting a two-year restraining order on a member of their extended family. they were twisting the the truth and I suspect that this is how they stirred up as much trouble as they have only the years.  I can only imagine what was said out here, but I am also aware that people are beginning see the truth in what my family and I have been through with these pushers. However, I am fighting back and will continue to do so.

I for one want a quieter and drug free area to live in.

Feeling Created

Happy 4th everyone,

Evelyn here,

I am enjoying a quiet afternoon of creativity. Later I will head out to the July the Fourth celebration and fireworks. However, now I am in a creative mood. Today, I learned how to add large pictures to my blog and I discovered that I could add video also. Video entries will make the summer fun to remember.

I have labored on the above wallpaper most of the day and I am quite pleased with the results. The main subject matter is a screen grab of Lucy Lawless as Cleopatra from her Xena Warrior Princess series. We Xenites do this type of art all the time and I have been guilty of it since 1999.

As I examined in an earlier entry, I started by learning how to make graphic art with the one or two graphic programs that came with an older computer and with other freeware programs I downloaded. As freeware programs went back then, I found some small but terrific graphic programs that I still use today. Two of those programs I purchased and a third while still free is now hard to find. I have purchased several more programs since. I may use up seven graphic programs to produce one background or wallpaper. Sometime it takes me minutes and other times hours or days to complete one project. The completion depends on whether I am working with a subject like the one above or if it is an original project.

Anyway, I have killed enough time in this day and must prepare for tonight.

An Evening With Friends - Leesburg Trip

Hello everyone,

Evelyn here,

As you know, on January 27, 2006, I went with friends to visit another of our choir members who has since moved to Leesburg. It was a beautiful trip and I am now just posting the pictures. While there, we also went to St. Paul Church where we met with and we listen to the music of the renounced William Pitcher. I sometimes have trouble listening to music played on an organ, but Mr. Pitcher is a fantastic organist and I could not resist getting one of his CDs.

All around it was a great way t spent a Friday evening with friends.

Blade The Series, A Review Update by Evelyn F. Altheimer-Fain

Hello everyone,

Evelyn here,

Well, I just finished watching the 2-hour premiere of Blade the Series with Kirk "Sticky" Jones in the starring role, and I must say the show opened far beyond my expectation of a beginning series. I learned a little more about the major characters. Blade as we know from the film adaptation is still fighting against demonic vampires (sound like an oxymoron, I mean what other type of vampires could there be if one think of the Dracula we of the 50s and 60s generation grew up viewing).

I believe that Jill Wagner’s character, Krista Starr, began the series as Gulf War Vet, and that she comes homes to discover that her brother (Zack) has been murder. She soon learned that the "people" who are responsible for his death are not people at all but vampires. While Krista searches for clue to who might have murdered her brother, she meets Blade, and she is quickly bought into his circle.

Blade sends her to a Chthon private party where she meets Marcus Van Sciver a leader of the Chthon’s vampire clan. Marcus has all the class and the polish that Spike (from The WB's Angel) lacked but is equally deadly. As the fates would have it, Marcus meets and likes Krista immediately. However, Krista discovers that she had found the one she has been seeking and "Whoa, momma!", she breaks out the hard utilities and from a rooftop has a chilling tête-à-tête with Marcus about what he is and what he is vulnerable to all while sighting him with a PVW (a sniper rifle). Lord, am I leaning some new terminology, and will not find this girl sitting home watching the soaps.

Krista still new the vampire hunting is out witted by Marcus and later wake as him captive where he turns her. As a vampire, she is more dangerous than in her human state because she becomes conscienceless and kills a crooked police detective without remorse. This lack of moral conscience last only until Blade shows up and injects her with a serum that controls her vampire nature to kill for blood. Krista is a vampire and she will remain one, but like Blade, she must inject herself with the serum to keep from becoming a mindless fiend.

There are many scenes in the series that has helped it earned its rating for not being suitable for younger viewers. The rating, which applies the series are for its strong language, strong sexual references, and high violence. However, the one major objection I have to the series is the scenes in which we see Blade and others are injected with either serum or some other form of substance. These scenes are objectionable as well as offensive because they are too similar to watching someone “shoot up” with an illegal substance. Children should not view this because of thebad connotation it bring to mind and/or any possible subversion to the true meaning of the scenes. I think we viewers got the point of the injections in the movie versions of Blade.

Once Blade has helped Krista come to her senses, he ahs a new ally. Krista also learned that Marcus murdered her brother (Zack) because of his partnership with Blade. She the goes back in the Chthon’s clan domain where she will act as a spy to help Blade and ultimately humanity.

Well this is my updated review on Blade the Series. Overall, it promises to be one of better cult series on the small screen this season and for us fans many seasons to come.

There is another clan named in the series, the Liechen, and each clan has a glyph or tattoo that identified members of their groups and under ultraviolet lighting a place of business or safe house. At this time, we do not know much about the Liechen, but there is every indication that they are adversaries of the Chthon’s chan and that the Liechen will play a major role in this series.

There also a Native American origin to these vampires and at this point we do not know who created whom.

The additional casts of the show are as follows.

Blade - Kirk "Sticky" Jones
Krista Starr - Jill Wagner
Marcus Van Sciver - Neil Jackson
Shen - Nelson Lee
Chase - Jessica Gower

Here are two more links about the show, and one of the links is an interview with Kirk “Sticky” Jones.
