This month marks an important anniversary for Florida consumers. Our state?s Lemon Law Arbitration Program is celebrating 20 years of helping motorists who purchased defective new vehicles. I?m excited to announce that this service, jointly administered by the Attorney General's Office and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, has helped over 14,000 people recover more than $376 million in refunds and replacements for their ?lemon? vehicles.

Today I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the newest group of Lemon Law arbitrators in St. Petersburg who help consumers navigate this process. I was also able to meet two satisfied Lemon Law consumers ? Cornell Foster and Nicholas Bralich. Mr. Foster received a refund for his 2006 BMW 325i because of recurring electrical malfunctions, and Mr. Bralich received a refund for his 2007 Chevrolet Corvette because of an intermittent engine delay. Each assured me the program had been extremely helpful in their situations.

Florida's Lemon Law gives manufacturers a reasonable number of attempts to repair substantial defects in a motor vehicle. If manufacturers fail to do so, they are required to buy back the defective vehicle and either pay a refund to the consumer or provide a replacement vehicle. Consumers are protected under the Lemon Law for 24 months after the date of delivery of the vehicle.

It is frustrating enough to have to deal with car trouble, let alone have to face complications over service on a brand-new vehicle that shouldn?t be having problems. I send my appreciation to the arbitrators who assist consumers with these challenges and who make Florida?s program an international model of consumer protection.

As with the Lemon Law program, I am pleased to help Floridians with some of their most important needs. More information is available online at: http://myfloridalegal.com/lemonlaw.
