COUNCIL ON SOCIAL STATUS OF BLACK MEN AND BOYS

UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE

WEBSITE PROVIDES INFORMATION ON COUNCIL’S MISSION

AND PROGRESS

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today unveiled a new tool for people to learn about and follow the progress of the Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys. A website has been created by the Office of Attorney General to keep the public informed on the Council’s meetings, agendas and other important information related to the Council’s charge. The Council has been meeting since February to draft a comprehensive report on conditions that disproportionately affect black men and boys including high infant mortality rates, poverty, health concerns, disparate annual income levels, murder and violence rates, arrest and incarceration rates and school performance. The report will be released on December 15, 2007.

“Council members have been working diligently to research complex questions and propose innovative and workable solutions for some of the toughest challenges facing Florida’s neighborhoods,” said Attorney General Bill McCollum. “This new website will provide an additional tool for citizens to participate in the process and stay on top of the Council’s progress.”

The website, CSSBMB, will include information on the Council’s mission and vision, schedules and agendas for upcoming meetings and contact information so citizens can be more engaged in the Council’s efforts. Information on the Council’s members and copies of minutes from monthly meetings will also be available, as well as the specific areas the Council’s subcommittees are focusing on and the subcommittees’ individual goals. The website will also include a media area with news releases and contact information, as well as a link to sign up for the Council’s mailing list.

“The Council is very excited about the opportunity to share information and ideas with all the residents of Florida,” said Levi Williams, Council Chairman. “Together, we will materially improve the quality of life for all Floridians and we encourage community leaders, educational institutions, employers, health care providers, elected officials, and all Floridians to visit our website. We can not make a difference without YOU!”

The Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys was created by the Legislature in 2006. The report due next month will include recommendations for addressing societal and cultural challenges that negatively impact black men and boys and their families. Measures may consist of changes to Florida laws or systemic changes that can be implemented without legislative action. The Council receives administrative support from the Office of Attorney General.
